U-21s: U-19s win first-ever trophy article U.S. forward Dwayne De Rosario is a World Cup finalist and has been named in Team USA’s squad for the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
De Rosario scored in his side’s 2-1 win over Austria on Tuesday to put them within one win of lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy for the third consecutive time.
U.S., Austria lead Group A ahead of Thursday’s third qualifying round tie.
“It’s a huge step forward for the U-17s, as they’ve now won two championships in a row,” USA Soccer coach John Hackworth said.
“And they’ve got one of the best players in the world in De Rosaryo, who has scored a hat trick in two of the past three games, including two in the final against Austria.”
De Rosaryos goals in the U.K. victory against England in March earned him his first cap, while the U23s won the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday and are currently the favorites to win the tournament.
Austria, the top-ranked team in the group, have beaten top-four European rivals France and Germany in the previous two qualifiers.
DeRosario scored twice in the win over England in the UEFA Cup on Tuesday and will face off against fellow U-18 star Kyle Bekker on Thursday.
